Stockbridge Town Centre – Spaces for People Phase 2 Proposal

Email from the Spaces for People team to local Ward Councillors and other key stakeholders including Stockbridge & Inverleith Community Council, Craigleith/Blackhall Community Council, West End Community Council and  the New Town & Broughton Community Council.

Dear Councillors and Stakeholders

Covid-19 Cycling and Walking Emergency Response Measures

Proposed waiting/loading restriction changes to facilitate footway widening – Raeburn Place, Deanhaugh Street, Kerr Street and Hamilton Place

Following our email of 26 June advising that we would notify you once further details were available for the proposals above, we are pleased to be able to provide these now.

We would suggest that you view the  attached plan to see the detail of what is proposed. In summary it shows:

  • Due to narrow pavements intervention is required to widen footpaths on both sides of Raeburn Place, Deanhaugh Street and Hamilton Place adjacent to commercial properties, unfortunately, all of these streets have considerable street clutter that reduce the available width.
  • Additional parking/loading/unloading facilities will be provided on Cheyne Street, and other locations may be possible.
  • All Bus stops remain (with the two noted on Hamilton Place moved out to reflect the new temporary kerb line if necessary).
  • Unfortunately, due to the extremely narrow footway on the south side of Raeburn Place it is not possible to provide on-street loading or parking facilities in this area. The bus stop at this location will move out to the new temporary kerb line during phase 2 to provide additional space.
  • Significant footway widening along the full length of the high street from Dean Park Street to Hamilton Place, to provide opportunity for social distancing and business queuing.
  • Loading places are retained at several points throughout the area to provide space for deliveries to and collections from local businesses.
  • Widened footway on the north side of Kerr Street, including the narrow corner at St Stephen Street.

In the first instance these measures will be introduced quickly using temporary traffic management equipment, such as cones. Where deemed suitable, this equipment will then be replaced with more robust semi-permanent materials once available.

Given the urgency to make the required changes any comments relating to these proposals should be received by 1200hrs on Friday 10 July 2020 to

SGN gas replacement works update for Raeburn Place area, Edinburgh

(adapted from emails from SGN)

Following on from this post, here is SGN’s latest on their work in the Raeburn Place area.

Our work is progressing really well and phase one of our project in Deanhaugh Street will be completed over the weekend. This means our engineers will start work on phase two of our project on Monday 10 February.

Raeburn Place will be closed to westbound traffic for the duration of phase two and a signed diversion route will be in place for motorists. Buses travelling westbound will also be following diversion routes.

Some parking restrictions will remain in place but pedestrian access to Raeburn Place will continue to be available at all times.

Regarding buses, SGN says

Lothian Buses have confirmed the following changes, taking affect from early Tuesday morning (11 February).

  • No: 36                                 Will return to its normal route.
  • No: 24, 29 and 42            Going into town, will return to its normal route.
  • No: 24, 29 and 42            Going out of town, the current diversion will stay in place.

Lothian Buses will update its website to reflect this. LB also advises that  if anyone has any further enquiries regarding the buses their Customer Service team will be happy to help.

SGN also say

It is with regret that neither Matt Ferguson (Project Manager) or myself are able to attend NTBCC’s meeting on Monday. However if there are any further concerns we can help with please let me know and I’ll pick it up on my return. Or my colleague Katie Lobban – will help.

I’d like to assure that we will do everything we can to help the local residents and customers to support them and tailor our day-to-day services to their individual needs to make sure we’re helping to support them during our works.

Update on Raeburn Place gas-works

Following on from this post about Raeburn Place gas-works, SGN emailed late on Friday 17 January:

Please see the Raeburn Place update below and note, traffic management is changing on Sunday. We have also hand delivered the letter to residents and businesses today making them aware of the changes.

Phase one of our project in Deanhaugh Street is progressing well and our engineers have nearly completed work in the bridge, meaning we can progress further along the road.

From Sunday 19 January, we’ll be working between Leslie Place and Dean Street and our signed diversion route for motorists will remain in place.

We’d like to thank Stockbridge residents and businesses for the support we’ve received so far whilst carrying out complex engineering work to upgrade our gas network.

Notification of major gas replacement works: Raeburn Place area, Edinburgh 6 January 2020

(adapted from an email from SGN, and posted here in case this affects NTBCC residents, businesses and visitors)

SGN manages the network that distributes natural and green gas to 5.9 million homes and businesses across Scotland and the south of England. We also provide the gas emergency service in these areas.

We’re investing £2.2 million to upgrade our gas network in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh and we’ll shortly begin the first section of our project.

This essential work involves the replacement of old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply.

In agreement with the City of Edinburgh Council and local authorities, our work in the Raeburn Place are of Edinburgh will begin on Monday 6 January 2020 and last approximately 30 weeks. Some road closures will be in place, but we’ve split the work into two phases to minimise disruption. Continue reading
