‘Trams to Newhaven’ : Response to Traffic Regulation Orders for new Tram route

Following a review of the proposed Traffic Regulation Orders for the new Tram route to Newhaven, the New Town and Broughton Community Council has submitted objections highlighting a number of concerns regarding
  • Access;
  • Displaced traffic;
  • Congestion and;
  • Lack of adequate segregation between pedestrians and cyclists.
The relevant Traffic Regulation Orders  are TRO/20/24A and TRO/20/24B.  The New Town and Broughton Community Council (NTBCC)  reviewed the proposed Traffic Regulation Orders at their recent meeting on 10 May – in particular for the section of the ‘Trams to Newhaven’ route from Picardy Place to McDonald Road (covered by Sheets 12 – 14) and have submitted objections  to them for the reasons set out below :

Summary of NTBCC’s ‘Broughton Street’ Special Meeting – Monday 29 March 2021

On 29th March, the Community Council held its first Special meeting for several years on the ‘Spaces for People’ (SfP) proposals for Broughton Street & NTBCC’s considered view of the proposals.

Thanks to everyone who took part in this well-attended public meeting – the bumper turnout demonstrated that there was significant interest from both residents and businesses but many were unaware of what was proposed until they saw the NTBCC flyer that was distributed to over 300 households and businesses mostly on Broughton Street and adjacent roads. In addition, several posts were added to the NTBCC website and the @NTBCC twitter feed to highlight the issues and our stance.

The numbers attending the Zoom meeting peaked at around 50 people – we also appreciated the engagement from some local Edinburgh councillors, with a special mention to local councillors, Jo Mowat (City Centre) & Hal Osler (Inverleith) as well as Cllr Susan Webber for joining the discussion. We were also pleased to see in attendance many Broughton Street traders/ businesses, a representative from the ‘Better Broughton’ group as well the director of the Cockburn Association.

We also highlighted the ongoing consultation regarding the retention of these measures and encouraged attendees to contact their local Councillors and others to express their views and participate in future plans for our community.

In our view, the meeting was very successful in communicating the Spaces for People proposal to the wider community and encouraging discussion. It was also very helpful to hear the views of those attending which may help to shape longer term proposals for Broughton Street.

Trams TROs consultation: starts 13 April

Please note this is from the Trams to Newhaven team. NTBCC will respond in due course – watch this space.

From Tuesday 13 April the project will commence the Traffic Regulation Order public consultation process (TRO). A TRO details the nature and extent of how our roads are used and managed such as road closures, restrictions on turning movements and the position of parking and loading spaces.

The purpose of the TRO process is to invite comment and objections on the parking and loading arrangements being proposed and any changes to moving traffic requirements and entry/exit from streets. Only measures presented within the traffic order may be objected to.

You will be able to view and comment on the TRO from Tuesday 13 April for a period of 28 days.
