The Council have just announced (see separate post) the temporary Spaces for People measures that will be implemented along the route from Canonmills to Broughton Street. While we welcome some aspects of the current plans including the widening of the pavements at the Broughton Road junction and the improvements made to a number of junctions along the route, we intend to highlight our disappointment with the overall package of measures. The current proposals largely ignore the feedback from the Commonplace Mapping conducted last year and make few meaningful improvements to pedestrian and cyclist safety.

Covid-19 Cycling and Walking Emergency Response Measures
Proposed footway expansion and segregated cycleways Broughton St to Canonmills
Please be advised that as part of overall emergency measures we are proposing, on Broughton Street running North to Canonmills, to re-designate key parts of the road network to help pedestrians and cyclists travel safely while meeting physical distancing requirements.
I have attached the proposed designs for the scheme. These show changes to the streets which, in summary, includes:
- Introduction of sections of segregated cycleway and pedestrian buildouts on Broughton Street, Rodney Street, Bellevue and Canonmills.
- Removal of one lane on approach to Broughton Roundabout from East and North. Removal of railings and extension of pavements at NE, SE and SW corners.
- Relocation of some loading to side streets off Broughton St and Rodney St (marked by double yellow lines (DYL)with single blips.
- Some existing parking altered to blue badge parking only on Broughton St using DYL with single blips.
- Additional restriction of parking at all times alongside the segregation at certain sections
- Retention of blue badge parking along the route
- Retention of existing bus stops
- Removal of railings at Canonmills junction excluding pedestrian island and corner at Warriston Rd.

All feedback will be reviewed and where possible the scheme will be further refined. Feedback will be summarised in an assessment feedback form which will be presented to the Council Incident Management Team for approval. Please note that we will be unable to respond to individual emails.

The introduction of, or changes to, any restrictions will be implemented under emergency delegated decision-making powers using a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order.
The following sets out the main points of discussion at the meeting of New Town & Broughton Community Council held on Monday 8 March 2021.
The meeting was attended by Community Councillors, local Councillors, those presenting on the George Street Development and members of the general public. The meeting was relayed by Zoom.

George Street And First New Town Project
NTBCC has been asked by Trams to Newhaven to publish the following. Any queries should be sent to them, via one of these contact-methods. NTBCC was not consulted on these diversions.
Location: North-bound side of Leith Walk
Timescale: 15 March 2021 till Autumn 2021 (in sections)
To allow for the continued construction of the new tram line and to begin creating the segregated cycleway that is part of the final design for the project, we are now required to review the bi-directional cycle lane provision on the north-bound side of Leith Walk.
While these works are being carried out there will be restrictions in in place for cyclists. Sections of the temporary bi-directional cycleway that are currently in place will need to close. Where possible, alternative routes will be signposted for cyclists, however there may be instances when this is not possible.
There will be signage installed for cyclists accessing the north-side of Leith Walk to advise of these changes.
