The FLY music festival – NTBCC’s objection

This was submitted to CEC by NTBCC in August

FAO; Sarah Murphy
Senior Programmes Officer
Parks, Greenspace & Cemeteries
Level 3.1 Waverley Court
4 East Market Street Edinburgh
EH8 8BG

Dear Ms Murphy,

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT – FLY OPEN AIR MUSIC FESTIVAL – WEST PRINCES STREET GARDENS – 16-18 SEPTEMBER 2022- (organisers on-site between 07-22 September 2022.)

Please note our objections to this event below.

  1. Contrary to the policy of Edinburgh Carbon Neutrality 2030: the FLY flared 175 kg propane gas on stage in 2021, equivalent to 523 kg of CO2 [CEC Freedom of Information Request response, 8 October 2021]. In addition, the FLY will use diesel generators producing pollution & emissions.
  2. Involves noise pollution: daily performances, which lasted 10 hours in 2021, have been extended to 11 hours (from 12.00 to 23.00) in 2022. The event is characterised by a continuous techno beat, disturbing nearby residents in the New and Old Towns, as documented by complaints in 2021.
  3. Harms wildlife: the intensive use of the park and fossil fuel flaring are harmful to wildlife, sensitive to the three types of pollution, and will result in a reduction in biodiversity.
  4. Has implications for public safety: the Ross Bandstand will be used overcapacity, with 4,000 attendees per show in avenue with an official capacity of 2,400.
  5.  Involves loss of amenity: the park will be used by the FLY for 15 days (7-22 September). The proposal form states, “The park will remain open at all times during the event”, but it is impossible for the whole park area to be 100% open to the public during that time, because the event requires large equipment to be brought in and out of the park.

Kind regards

Laura Graham
Secretary, New Town & Broughton Community Council
